Lot Essay

Edward Lucie-Smith comments on the present work, 'A superb drawing in the same medium, showing a horse lying down, is not so obviously a direct transcription from life, but a stylization, with Chinese art very much in mind. For whatever reasons, the horse drawings are resonant with cultural echoes, reaching well beyond the boundaries either of purely contemporary or of purely European art, while the representations of dogs tend to be intimate and domestic' (loc. cit).
