Lot Essay

'A series of drawings of seated men, made in 1989, returns to a motif which she had begun to use in sculpture six years previously - a male nude, seated on a bench ... In the sculpture, the figure sits meditatively, bracing one hand on his thigh, while the other rests between his knees (family and friends have said that this attitude was one typical of her husband, Alex Csáky). In the drawings, the figure grips the bench with one or both hands, as if about to lever himself away from it. The whole posture is more alert' (see E. Lucie-Smith, loc. cit.).
