As Solly wrote in his Memoir of the Life of David Cox, London, 1873, p. 17 '[Cox] considered for some time whether he should apply to John Varley, John Glover or William Havell. Finally he determined to apply to Varley and he often said, in after life, how much he rejoiced that he came to that decision'. The present watercolour is an early work by the artist when he was under Varley's influence. At this time London was a principal source of subject matter for the artist, and the present watercolour has been tentatively identified as Clapham Common.
