The present drawing is a study for Hockney's 1962 painting Picture Emphasizing Stillness (private collection) and relates to a series of works of this period in which titles allude to stylistic problems facing the artist (see David Hockney A Restrospective, Tate Gallery exhibition catalogue, Los Angeles and London, 1988, p. 25).
