First edition of a dialogic treatise on fortune and coping mechanisms. This is the only extant work of Adrian, a Carthusian at the Charterhouse of Saint Gertruydenberg near Bois-le-Duc, and at Liège. Borrowing its title from Petrarch, it takes the form of a dialogue between a "cultor virtutis" and a "tyro vanitatis," who differ in their responses to good and bad fortune. Chancery half-sheet quarto (205 x 136mm). 159 leaves (of 160 leaves, without final blank), with an additional 11 leaves of contents from the second edition printed by Arnold Ther Hoernen in 1471 bound at the front). Red initials, capital strokes, headers (some light marginal dampstaining; about 18 leaves with small repairs to upper corner, on final leaf touching the tops of several letters; some manuscript headers trimmed). Modern oxblood morocco, edges blue. Provenance: a few marginal comments (cropped).
