Contemporary red paper-covered boards, leather title-label on backstrip, lettered in gilt (rebacked, old spine laid down, inner hinges repaired). PUBLISHER'S PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of 'the most interesting and important work yet published on the subject of African reseaches' (Lowndes), this probably 'one of very few copies printed upon thick paper for presents only' (op.cit.). According to Lowndes there were three issues: the regular issue, a special issue with the plates on india paper, and then a third issue 'for presents only'. - Unfortunately, the present example must be considered imperfect because of a mistake by the publishers or original binders.
