Denis Auguste Marie Raffet was born in Paris and educated at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He became known for his lithographs of the Napoleonic campaigns, from Egypt to Waterloo. He lived in Rome during its siege, which he depicted in his Episodes de la campagne d'Italie de 1859. His portraits in pencil and watercolor are full of character. His works are held at The State Hermitage Museum, Louvre, and Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
