DICTYS Cretensis & DARES Phrygius. Warhafftige Histori und beschreibung von dem Troianischen krieg und zerstörung der Stat Troie. Translated by Marcus Tatius Alpinus. Augsberg: H. Stayner, 24 April 1540.
2° (300 x 198mm). Large woodcut on title, 65 woodcut illustrations by Schäufelein, Burgkmair and others (one full-page), 30 tail-piece decorations, several large historiated initials. (Occasional worming, marginal in the main.) Contemporary wooden boards (rebacked in vellum, remains of calf binding visible under pastedowns, clasps lacking).
Second edition of the first German translation. The first edition was published in 1536. The presence of a tab on the final leaf, combined with the rebacking and the non-alignment of wormholes between the final leaf and the pastedown, indicates that this work was formerly bound with at least one other work. Cf. Fairfax Murray German 133; Worstbrock 183.
