8° (187 x 125 mm). 37 illustrations after the author, including 14 full-page. Original gilt-stamped red cloth, spine gilt-lettered, edges gilt (spine with a touch of wear). Provenance: Alexandra R. DODGSON, C.L. Autograph letter signed ('yours affectionately C.L. Dodgson') to 'Xie', Christ Church, Oxford, 7 June 1892, thanking her for an earlier letter: 'I feel much encouraged by it and am emboldened to sign myself, in haste', one page, 12mo (some creasing and staple holes).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY DODGSON TO HIS FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHIC MODEL: 'Alexandra ['Xie'] R. Kitchin from the author. Jan. 1887'. Dodgson took at least 50 pictures of Xie over the course of 11 years. 'She was a perfect sitter' Henry Holiday recalls in his Reminiscences (1914); 'Dodgson asked me if I knew how to obtain excellence in a photograph. I gave it up. "Take a lens and put Xie before it"' (p.165). 'A most interesting volume, consisting of a facsimile of the first draft of Alice's Adventures in the Author's hand, and [with] illustrations by him' (WMGC p.144). Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 194.
