Uriah the Hittite was the first husband of Bathsheba, whom King David fell in love with. King David instructed his general, Joab, to place Uriah in the front line and withdraw his support, leaving him to a certain death (2 Samuel XI, 15). These two panels, which probably formed part of a cassone, aptly reminded the viewer of the moral implications of marriage.
