DOUBLEDAY, General Abner (1819-1893). Autograph document signed ("A. Doubleday"), "Camp near Belle Plain Va.", 15 April 1863. 1 page, 8vo, Third Division Headquarters stationery, integral blank partially detached. [With:] A card signed of Henry Wallace. BEFORE CHANCELLORSVILLE. A recommendation for the promotion of Captain Craney of the 95th New York Infantry written by Doubleday less than a month before the Battle of Chancellorsville. Doubleday notes that Craney "has been in action with me at Gainesville, Bull Run, South Mountain and Antietam" and recommends him as "He is an excellent officer and deserves promotion." Doubleday, the man who is frequently credited with the invention of baseball because he developed some rules for the game, was thrust into the position of corps commander on the first day at Gettysburg and played a key role in the battle of July 1, 1863.
