This work, based on the image of Sir Desmond MacCarthy (1877-1952) by Duncan Grant, currently on display in the National Portrait Gallery, was made as part of a series by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell to commemorate members of Bloomsbury's Memoir Club. Another one in the series is Grant's portrait of Lydia Lopokova (Lady Keynes) in the National Portrait Gallery.
