The present work depicts the contraption that Duncan Grant built at Charleston with the idea of putting flamingos on the pond in this country retreat of the Bloosmbury Group. Dr Wendy Hitchmough of The Charleston Trust has written, 'The painting of the gazebo at Charleston is especially interesting to me as, quite aside from its value as a painting, it illustrates a temporary structure that, according to legend, was intended to house a flock of flamingos. Although the gazebo was built for Duncan Grant the flamingos, to our knowledge, never arrived.'

We are grateful to Dr Wendy Hitchmough for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
