Half titles, titles printed in red and black, wood-engraved illustrations, some full-page, 2 coloured lithographed maps (occasional light spotting). Original publisher's morocco-backed cloth, the upper covers with panel decorated in gilt and decorated with inlaid blue beads, gilt edges (2 beads lacking, extremities rubbed, scuffed). Blackmer 528: "[Ebers] was a close friend of Alma Tadema who has contributed to the illustrations in this work." The Blackmer copy is dated 1879; an earlier edition of 1870 is also recorded. Our copy is undated.
