[?EDMUND BURKE (1729-1797)]

An Impartial History of the War in America between Great Britain and Her Colonies. London: R. Faulder, 1780. 8º (206 x 124mm). Large folding engraved map and 13 engraved portraits. (Title and preface leaf with browning to margins, map affected by offsetting and with 3cm. tear at one edge, offsetting from plates onto text, portrait of Horatio Gates with light offsetting from text.) Contemporary half calf and speckled boards, red edges (rubbed, head of spine worn).

STRONG IMPRESSIONS OF THE PORTRAITS. This was another edition of The History of the War in America (Dublin, 1779), plagiarized from the Annual Register. This edition was made more attractive by the inclusion of the thirteen portraits of American patriots and British officers, including Washington, Franklin, John Hancock, Charles Lee, General and Admiral Howe, Generals Putnam and Gates, and an American rifleman. As Church notes, the attribution to Burke was made by Dr. William Smyth in one of his lectures on modern history. Church 1171; Howes B-975; Sabin 34375.
