Lot Essay

Once one of the four or five most affluent Benedictine monasteries in England, but all that now remains of St. Edmunds is two mighty gates.

This particular work is a view of the Great Gate, on the abbey side, set into the abbey precinct wall itself. Built after the riots of 1327, during which the monastery was sacked and burnt, the façade features a sloped doorway on the ground level, with a magnificent three light aperture above.
