Although he was not himself a sailor, Edward Duncan is best known for his coastal scenes. He was introduced to marine painting by William Huggins, whose pictures he engraved and whose daughter, Bertha, he married. Duncan made frequent sketching tours, generally confined to the southern counties and the Bristol Channel, although also he made occasional visits to Scotland and Wales. The present work employs the strong blue and green palette and bold white heightening common to many works by this artist.
