Hopper was fascinated by trains and produced many etchings portraying this subject matter. They were an aspect of Hopper's life since he commuted daily both to and from the city to attend art classes. Hopper was influenced by his comrade Martin Lewis and the two often used angles in their prints, evident in this image with the locomotive jutting across the scene. This print exemplifies Hopper's style both with his usage of light and shadow, demonstrating strong contrasts between dark and light areas, as well as the depiction of everyday subject matter from a unique point of view.
