In 1837 the 13th Earl of Derby and his cousin Robert Hornby undertook to send Lear to Italy. Apart from two return visits to England, Lear remained in Italy for the next ten years, developing his sketching style. In 1838 Lear left Rome with fellow artist James Uwins to spend the summer in the Bay of Naples. Finding Naples too crowded and noisy, they installed themselves in the small village of Capo di Cava, perched at the end of a deep valley. Lear spent his days going for long walks out on to the cliff road leading down to Amalfi and views across the Gulf of Salerno.

Lot Essay
Lear visited Amalfi in the summer of 1838, however the present watercolour would have been worked up later in his studio, the date is puzzling as Lear did not begin to sign with a monogram until 1859.
