Lear spent only a short time in Damascus in May 1858 but found it beautiful: 'Imagine 16 worlds full of gardens rolled out flat, with a river & a glittering city in the middle' (Letter to Lady Waldegrave, 27 May 1858, in V. Noakes, Edward Lear: The Life of a Wanderer, London, 2004, p. 137).
