Lot Essay

'[O]ne is never weary of looking at the beautiful outline of Avellino and Monte Vergine through the framework of hanging vines... There is a carriage-road from the city to the village of Spedaletto, situated at a considerable height on the mountain, and beyond this, the path to the monastery is for more than three miles a very steep zig-zag' (P. Quennell, Edward Lear in Southern Italy, London, 1964, p. 167).
