Lot Essay

This charming small scale Dutch Calm seems to have been produced while on a painting holiday in the Isle of Wight. Cooke was so well versed in this subject that he probably did not need sketches. It would have provided artistic relief from the pebble shores and chalk cliffs on which he was currently working, while at the same time suppling an ever-growing demand for these tranquil little Dutch scenes.
We are grateful to John Munday for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
