EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Albert') to his first wife, Mileva, n.p., 22 December [1939], two pages, 4to.
'OUR DAYS ARE ESSENTIALLY OVER AND WE MUST PREPARE FOR THE END'. The letter goes into some detail over Mileva's involved financial situation, which is centred in particular on the mortgage of the Zurich house, which Einstein suggests should be sold. Independently of this decision, however, Einstein considers it 'absolutely necessary' that his younger son Eduard, institutionalised since 1933, should be declared incapable: 'Only consider the helplessness of his situation if he ever came into a position of having money at his disposal'; he also attempts to advise on what Mileva should do in relation to an inheritance in Novisad in her native Serbia. As for himself he is unsteady on his legs, and a doctor friend thinks he may have overstrained his heart: 'However that may be, our days are essentially over and we must prepare for the end'. Simple solutions are the best, he concludes.
