EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed (with initials, 'A.E.') to his elder son, Hans Albert, n.p., 7 June [1948], one page, 4to.
DISSUADING HANS ALBERT FROM A LAST TRIP TO ZURICH: Mileva's financial affairs are now hopelessly confused, in spite of the purchase of the Zurich house by a benevolent society set up for the purpose. If Hans Albert wishes to make a trip there, his father's savings are at his disposal, but he considers it pointless: 'De facto you can do absolutely nothing for your mother when you are there ... Consider that the savings could better be employed in improving the lot of those still in the prime of life whom we leave behind than thrown away in such a hopeless cause'; he speculates as to how, in spite of all that has been done, Mileva should end up in such dire straits: 'Is it possible that your mother is so mentally disturbed that she is no longer capable of looking after money? ... Perhaps she put it all in cash and it has simply been stolen ... For her closed, mistrustful nature, anything is possible'. Hans Albert's proposed journey would simply add extra upsets to the sad situation.
