MILEVA'S DIRE FINANCIAL STRAITS, AND HANS ALBERT'S EMIGRATION. In the earliest letter, Einstein expresses his pleasure at the glowing reference given to Hans Albert's work by a professor, and hopes that it may soon be printed. On another note, the poor economic conditions have brought Mileva close to bankruptcy, and her two houses in Zurich are threatened with repossession, even though one of them brings in a good rental income. Einstein proposes therefore to transfer ownership of the houses to Hans Albert and Eduard, and take on the considerable costs of the transaction himself: 'Then something will be saved for you from your mother's fortune, and Tete [i.e. Eduard] will not fall entirely in the care of the state after my death'. In May of the following year, Einstein sends an affidavit and petition (not present) necessary for Hans Albert's application for a US visa, and urges him to proceed at once with applications for academic posts, as a year's delay could prove costly. The following month he refers to the dispatch of another paper to the US consulate for the same purpose. (3)
