EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his son, Hans Albert, Princeton, 4 January 1937, 1½ pages, 4to; envelope.
'WORK ... IS THE ONLY THING THAT GIVES MY LIFE ANY REAL MEANING'. Einstein declares himself 'saddened' by the financial difficulties of 'your mother' [his first wife, Mileva]: he has given a large sum of money for building work on her house, and can do no more in the matter. 'I only have a fixed income, and a mass of people depend on me, who because of the upheavals in Germany have fallen into desperate need'. But in any case, Einstein would feel it as a great injustice if the books and piano were taken away that he gave to 'my poor son Eduard back then as the only comfort in his irreparable misfortune'. The letter continues with further bad news: 'About 14 days ago my wife died after long and heavy suffering. Everything is really coming together to make my existence difficult. But as long as I can work, I must not and will not complain; for that is the only thing that gives my life any real meaning'. The letter ends with suggestions as to how Hans Albert might begin to organise his emigration to the United States.
