ELSA & ALBERT EINSTEIN
A one-page typed letter in German from Elsa, unsigned, dated Princeton N.J. den 30.11. 1935, 112 Mercer St., to César Koch, "Lieber Onkel Cäsar," with an 8-line autograph note in Einstein's hand at foot, also unsigned.
Elsa talks of the pain of last year having brought on an illness; she is suffering from heart and kidney trouble and has lost her sight in one eye. However, they have moved into a lovely house in Princeton. Albert is very busy with his work. Margot [her second daughter and Albert's step-daughter] spends half the time with them; she is a sculptress and creation is everything to her. She is too tired to dictate a longer letter.
In the manuscript post-script, Einstein maintains that his life passes in quiet industry, but there isn't very much to report. You have to be happy when you have a quiet study in which one can forget the hurley burley of human life.
