Lot Essay

A plaster model of the present group was first exhibited at the 1887 Salon (no. 4554), which was later given by the French state to the Valenciennes Museum. The bronze was later exhibited at 1889 Salon (no. 4996), the same year a life-size bronze version was erected in front of the Institut Pasteur, Paris, where it remains displayed in the gardens today.
