Details
EMMA, LADY HAMILTON (1765-1815)

Autograph letter signed ('E. Hamilton') to Lady Plymouth [presumably Sarah, wife of Other, 5th Earl of Plymouth], n.p. [Naples], n.d. ('Monday evening'), 4 pages, 4to (small nick in 2nd leaf; occasional spotting; light soiling to upper part of last page).

Emma Hamilton sends news from the court of the Queen of Naples, Maria Carolina (sister of the executed Marie Antoinette), assuring Lady Plymouth of the Queen's regard ('she ... speaks of you as a Signora molto buona amabile'), and praising the Queen's character, 'the more I see of her the more I love her and I do assure you she loves you dearly and respects you which is better'; giving some news of court life in a chatty way and sending regards from 'Sir William & mother'. Emma Hamilton met Nelson for the first time in September 1793, when Hood had sent Nelson to Naples to seek reinforcements for the beleaguered Toulon garrison.
