Lot Essay

Schloss Schönbrunn was the summer Palace of the Habsburg family in Vienna. First designed in 1690, it was meant to rival the Palace of Versaille in France. However in 1695-6 the plan was revised and the slightly less ambitious 1,440 room building was completed in 1711.
