Lot Essay

The panorama ranges from the British Garrison (on parade) on the left to the Maligawa Temple (Temple of the Tooth) on the shore of the lake in the right foreground. The inclusion of St Paul's Church, begun in 1843 and completed in 1848, dates the picture to the mid 19th century. The President's House, the large white colonial building in the centre of the picture, was rebuilt by Governor Horton around 1835. For three views of Kandy and environs pre-dating the present view, but possibly by the same hand, see Christie's London, 26 Sept. 2007 lots 418 and 419.
