Meditationes Sinicae. Paris: Joseph Bullot, 1737. 2° (337 x 221mm). Part printed in double columns, one folding table. (Occasional light browning, more prevalent to rear, very occasional underlining in blue pencil.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments with red morocco label, red speckled edges (joints cracked but firm, corners worn, extremities somewhat rubbed). Provenance: N. Marcel (signature to title-page) -- [Abraham-Hyacinthe] Anquetil-Duperron (1731-1805; signature to title-page) -- 4 leaves of ms. notes inserted between D1 and D2.
FIRST EDITION: FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE ORIENTAL SCHOLAR AND TRAVELLER ABRAHAM-HYACINTHE ANQUETIL-DUPERRON, who, having been instructed in Mandarin by a native speaker in 1711, went on to be the first Frenchman to successfully provide an explanation of written Chinese and the system of 214 radicals from which all characters are derived.
