Doris Duke was one of the most extraordinary among them. She traveled through life with an imaginative mind and a generous spirit and left behind a legacy dedicated to improving the quality of people's lives. Doris Duke was born in 1912, the only daughter of James Buchanan 'Buck' Duke and his second wife, Nanaline Holt Inman. At a young age, Doris witnessed both the charitable and entrepreneurial sides of her father, a North Carolina native, who founded the American Tobacco Company and the Duke Power Company with his father and brother. In l924, less than a year before he would die of pneumonia, Buck Duke created The Duke Endowment to provide a permanent source of funding for Duke University (formerly Trinity College) and other designated public and religious institutions serving the people of the Carolinas. Her father's charitable legacy and the Duke family's long history of supporting public programs were traditions that Doris Duke maintained throughout her life. Doris Duke innovatively blended her life passions with philanthropic causes. When she was just twenty-one, she established a foundation called Independent Aid, later to become the Doris Duke Foundation. It is estimated that she gave away more than $400 million in current dollars during her lifetime, often as anonymous contributions. Today, her generosity continues through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, which was established in 1996 and is one of the largest national foundations ever created by a woman.
