Professor Sumowski considers this drawing to be the earliest example of Bol's painterly portrait-drawings (loc. cit.), interpreting the date as 1642 rather than 1643. According to Professor de Jongh, the motive of a column in Bol's portraits is a symbol of stability (E. de Jongh, Kwesties van betekenis. Thema en motief in de Nederlandse schilderkunst van de zeventiende eeuw, Leiden, 1995, pp. 105-127).
