FERDINAND V (1452-1516), King of Spain. Document signed ("Yo el Rey"), as King of Aragon, 1512. 3½ pages, 4to (215 x 290 mm.), large seal stain does not affect text. CIVIC PLANNING IN GRANADA. The marriage of Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon consolidated rule over the lands of Spain into one monarchy. After Queen Isabella's death in 1504, Castille was only nominally ruled by King Ferdinand, who had no claims there beyond those which had been established through his marriage. The people answered instead to the Queen's successor, Ferdinand's daughter Juana, The Madwoman, who was all but incapable of rule. In this document addressing issues in Granada, the King is forced to speak officially in the name of Juana, despite his signature at its conclusion. Specifically, Ferdinand lays foundations for the renovation and expansion of Granada, particularly expressing the desire to remove all tanners to areas outside of town, despite protests which the King efficiently addresses. Apparently, the tanneries produced offensive odors.
