FIRST EDITION of Fitzgerald's second novel. PRESENTATION COPY TO HIS LITERARY AGENT HAROLD OBER, inscribed by the author on front free endpaper: "For Harold Ober from his friend F. Scott Fitzgerald, Feb. 6th, 1922. St. Paul, Minn." This is one of the 25 copies of The Beautiful and Damned that Fitzgerald requested be sent to him in his letter to Max Perkins at Scribner's of 30 January 1922: "My twenty five are all for family, authors who have sent books + personal friends" (Letters, ed. M.J. Bruccoli and M.M. Duggan, p. 94). February 6 was the earliest date on which he inscribed copies: the one presented to his mother also bears that date; publication day was not until March 4. Bruccoli A8.I.a.
