The Otani expedition to Central Asia was carried out in three trips between 1902 and 1914 under the leadership of Count Otani Kozui (1876–1948), the 22nd abbot of the Nishi Honganji monastery in Kyoto. The mission was to investigate Buddhist sites and return with Buddhist manuscripts, especially old sutras. Most of the material is preserved in the library of Otani University, Kyoto.
