Lot Essay
The present picture, of which there is another version in a private collection in the Netherlands, represents the Castle of Sluis, constructed circa 1386 to the plans of the French maître maçon Dreue de Dampmartin and destroyed in the war of 1794, the Church of Saint John, which was destroyed by fire in 1811, and the old Town Hall with its tower, which is the only belfry in the Northern Netherlands.
