Lot Essay

The son of King Carlo Emanuele III, Vittorio Amedeo's activities as a soldier and politician were less successful than those of his father, and his failed opposition to the French Revolution resulted in his exile and his territories being overrun by the French armies. His patronage included the foundation (1778) of the new Reale Accademia di Belle Arti in Turin, decoration of the royal residences, a series of private and public commissions and the support of the porcelain factory at Vinovo, which was established with royal patronage in 1776 and continued in production until 1825.
