Lot Essay

This corresponds closely to the print by Claude Donat Jardinier, which extends the composition to the lower and the right sides (see Baron R. Portalis & H. Béraldi, Les Graveurs du Dix-Huitième Siècle, 1881, II, p. 488). Smith, in his A Catalogue Raisonné, etc. (London, 1838, VIII, Greuze, no.29), records a painting of this subject by Greuze, on canvas and measured 23 x 18 in. (58.4 x 45.7 cm.).
