Lot Essay

Marie Leczinska was the Queen of King Louis XV of France, and Marie-Josèphe of Saxony was married to their son, Louis, Dauphin of France, the father of King Louis XVI. The presence of this picture in the collection is indicative of the very close relationship between the royal houses of France and Savoy that was cemented by the marriage of two of Marie-Josèphe's younger sons, later Kings Louis XVIII and Charles X of France, to daughters of King Vittorio Amedeo III of Sardinia.
