Judging by the numbers which exist, Peter Monamy must obviously have been fond of impressive stern views and this example is very like several of his works, most notably a fleet scene showing numerous vessels firing salutes. The principal ship in that work has been identified as the Royal George and this painting may also depict her given the striking similarities of both protrayals.
