Lot Essay

The composition is based on Robert Campin's Virgin in the Apse in the Thyssen Bornemisza collection, Madrid. which has been a popular composition in the 15th and early 16th centuries. Several versions are known, among others, another picture on linen by the Master of the Dijon Madonna, sold with Christie's, New York, 29 January 1999, lot 176.
