[FORT TICONDEROGA]. Copy by John Lansing of a letter from Major General W. Philips to Captain John Schanck, [Burgoyne's camp, Lake Champlain, 15 November 1776]. 1 page, folio, endorsed on verso "copy General Phillips's orders," minor tears to two folds, otherwise fine. PHILLIPS REFUSES TO TREAT WITH THE AMERICAN REBELS. British General William Phillips, from "Camp at St. John's," writes Schanck, "commanding the Naval Department at St. John's"; noting that "a Coppy of this may be given to the Rebels." Phillips orders: "The Boat from Tyconderoga called a Flagg of Truce may be sent back with the persons who came in it...his Excellency the Commander in Chief [John Burgoyne] does not permitt Flaggs of Truce or any Communication with the American Rebels, unless coming to implore the King's mercy." He adds that "it is recommended to them to be careful how they venture within the posts of the army as they will be treated as Spies."
