Lot Essay

Born in Apulia, Francesco and his brother, Cesare, moved to Naples in 1622 where they entered the studio of Naples' foremost artist, Ribera. The treatment of the landscape in the present picture shows the influence of Salvator Rosa, whose sister Francesco married in 1632. The poetic, soft features of the figures illustrate the influence of Fracanzano's contemporary, Cavallino.

We are grateful to Professor Nicola Spinosa for the attribution, given after examiniing the picture in the original.
