Turk, a bay Horse, held by a groom in the grounds of Marbury Hall, Cheshire, with the Obelisk and the Tower

inscribed and dated, below the horse 'Turk 1753/Heavy in Make, in Action Light.'

Lot Essay

In the light of the inscription, it seems that this may be a painting of a type as much as a specific horse. Turkish horses were coarser than Arabs although some played a part in the formation of the thoroughbred. Strangely many were actually Arabs, probably even the Byerley Turk.
