'COQ DE GIROUETTE', A COPPER WEATHERVANE BY FRANCOIS POMPON, 1924

The design of this vane was created in 1908, adapted in 1924 for the first edition of 15 by Chennegros, and then recast in 1932.
The suject of the cokrell might come from an event that happened during Pompon's youth. As he was working in a cementery he would have stolen the wind vane of the chapel and later restituted it
This piece will be referenced in the revised edition of the book about the artist actually in preparation

Le modèle de 1908 a été édité en 1924 à quinze exemplaires par Chennegros, puis en 1932. La tête a été réétudiée en 1924 pour l'édition. Le moule en plomb ainsi que les dessins à grandeur sont conservés au Musée de Dijon. Le coq évoquerait un souvenir de la jeunesse de Pompon, qui travaillant au cimetière de Saulieu, aurait ramassé le coq tombé de la chapelle, l'aurait subtilisé, le trouvant très beau. Pris de remords, il l'aurait restitué à la demande du curé le réclamant véhémentement en chaire contre la promesse du pardon
