FIRST EDITION. These three massive volumes describe the history of Parisian libraries from the 10th century to the Revolution, beginning with that of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and the Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève, followed by the Sorbonne, the Faculté de Médicine, the Mazarine and the Bibliothèque du Roi (Impériale, Nationale), there are also descriptions of numerous small or little-known Parisian libraries, secular and monastic, many no longer extant, with reproductions or transcriptions of ancient charters, documents, and library catalogues; reproductions of bindings, inscriptions, and armorial devices are given throughout. Franklin was, from 1856 until his death, on the staff of the Bibliothèque Mazarine, from 1885 as administrator. (3)
