Manuscript Portuguese chart of the Adriatic Sea comprising the eastern coasts of Italy, the Gulf of Venice and the Adriatic coast south to Corfu, ink and wash on paper, 530 x 1,320mm, on 3 pieces of paper joined. The chart showing the coastlines, shoals and rocks, with soundings on the Italian coasts, principal bays and capes named, rhumb line system in sea areas, title set in a black-ruled cartouche. (Some light spotting, light soiling along old fold lines.)
A MANUSCRIPT SEA CHART OF THE ADRIATIC DRAWN UP BY ONE OF THE FOREMOST PORTUGUESE CARTOGRAPHERS OF THE PERIOD. The son of Miguel Franzini, the Italian Professor of Mathematics at Coimbra University and tutor to the future King João VI, Marino Miguel Franzini began his career in the Portuguese Navy, which was disbanded by Junot shortly after his arrival in Portugal, and then held a commission as a major in the Corps of Engineers, before being enlisted into the Legião Portuguesa by Junot. In 1811 he published his map of the Portuguese coast Carta geral que comprehende os planos das Principaes Barras de Portugal, which was followed by statistical, cartographic and scientific works, including his meteorological observations, which were the first to be made in Portugal. In later life, Franzini held political, military and legal positions, amongst them Director of the Military Archive, Minister of State, and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon.
