Following two trips to Egypt in 1858 and 1870 Frederick Goodall became fascinated by the exotic life of the Orient. In search of an authentic experience, Goodall travelled and camped with Bedouins and his work features Egypt mostly. Goodall's first commission was a set of 6 watercolours that was exhibited at the Royal Academy when Goodall was only 16 years old. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1852. He counted the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and Charles Dickens among his friends.
